Some interesting facts about Baja:
The mountains in the background of the header picture are the northern extent of the Sierra de Laguna with up to 7,000 foot peaks. This mountain range is the southern extent of a granitic batholith that developed and worked it's way up between the Pacific plate and the North American plate and became Baja over the past 20 million years.
This "batholith" extends north to about Mt Lassen and includes the Sierra Nevada, southern CA desert mtns and the Baja peninsula. The San Andreas fault bisects this "batholith" around San Diego and continues south though the Gulf of CA, Sea of Cortez and appears again in Los Arcos, "Lands End" in Cabo.
Baja California was the original "California," named as such long before the State of CA, meaning "the place at the edge of the world." Tourism has been a part of Baja since long before it became a Mexican State.
The western hemispheric deserts of Baja, Southern CA and South America are the only places in the world where Cacti exist.
In fact, 70% of all Cacti species on Earth are endemic to Baja; meaning they only exist naturally in Baja. Eastern hemisphere deserts contain no Cacti.
When in Baja one must taste the unique Baja Margarita made with Damiana. Damiana liqueur is made from the Damiana plant a medicinal herb that may have aphrodisiac properties as well as treatment for UTI's etc.
Damiana is endemic to Baja and the Liqueur is only available in Baja.
